EXHIBITION
"Traversing, Tainan" is an exhibition curated by the Tainan Art Museum, focusing on this ancient city that has endured the test of time. Through various perspectives, we explore the rational development of the city and the emotional context of its lifestyle. To present the rich and diverse content of the exhibition in an accessible and artistically interpretive way, ULTRACOMBOS was commissioned as the curatorial team to create a series of multimedia exhibits and theater spaces. This is a city that stepped onto the world stage as early as the Age of Exploration. Time has layered itself here, forming winding alleys and creating a unique urban landscape that depicts the texture of the city. From this moment onward, you will see the scenery of Tainan, spanning centuries, unfold before your eyes like a painting.

The "map" is the central storytelling tool, capturing Tainan’s transformation and construction across eras. It guides viewers through the city's history, helping them understand its development from a broader perspective.
We want viewers to appreciate the complexity of Tainan's urban planning, including its housing, industry, transportation, energy, water resources, and public facilities. Through multiple layers and viewpoints, they can grasp the city's evolving landscape.
Our "slice" design breaks down elements like infrastructure, industry, and culture, presenting them in a static display for closer inspection.
To convey the city's vibrancy, we've created the interactive "Southern City Observatory." This installation projects dynamic data about Tainan, with a central map revealing hidden stories and a panoramic floor display offering insights into the city's climate, transportation, and rhythms, giving viewers a sense of Tainan's urban pulse.

URBAN PLANNING REVEALS TAINAN’S UNIQUE DEVELOPMENT

DISTANT REALM
In the final exhibition area, we created the theatrical work *"Distant Realm."* This piece envisions "the future of Tainan," symbolizing how the city uses digital tools to address urban challenges. Through intelligent data analysis, the goal is to improve the quality of life and establish human-centered services. During the development of this smart city, we introduced the concept of a "resilient city," aiming to enhance the city's environmental endurance and recovery through technology, enabling it to respond to disasters and improve residents' lives, making Tainan a sustainable, intelligent, and resilient city. The entire theatrical piece is divided into several chapters: soil and water conservation, farmland planning, marine environments, industrial symbiosis, and future reflections.
These chapters revolve around the following key terms as experience indicators: flexible, redundant, robust, resourceful, reflective, inclusive, and integrated. To craft a unique sound for Tainan, the team invited MUSDM's Yu Jia-Lun to compose exclusive music for the theater, with director Huang Hsin-Yao providing the narration, bringing out the poetic side of Tainan. In addition to exploring issues such as climate change, natural and cultural conservation, marine conservation, and farmland resource protection, we collaborated with ROSO Robotic Construction Laboratory to create 3D-printed sculptures as symbols of Tainan's geographic state. These sculptures, combined with sound, data visualization, performance segments, floor projections, and three-dimensional installations, come together to form a compelling vision of Tainan's future city.

Roso Geographic Sculptures
These visual concepts represent Tainan's geographic formation and were 3D-printed with ROSO Robotic Construction Laboratory. The resulting sculptures, featuring elements like lagoons, mountains, streams, hills, and the sea, combine with sound, data visualization, and projections to create a vision of Tainan's future city.
